# Credits

## What uses credits

**Making a note with `create_note` uses credits**, for two things:

* **Saving a source**: when a link or file is saved for the first time. Speech recognition for videos and audio counts here too.
* **Writing the note**: with the model you chose.

Looking up notes and organizing folders is free.

## Choosing a model

When making a note, you can pick a model with `model`. Leave it empty for `auto`: the free plan uses the `free` model, and paid plans use a default model Readray picks. Better models use more credits. From fewest credits to most:

`free` → `gemini-2.5-flash` · `gemini-3.8-flash` → `claude-haiku-5.5` → `gpt-6.1-sol` → `claude-sonnet-5` → `claude-fable-5` → `claude-opus-5.5`

Unlike in the app, the `free` model also uses credits over MCP.

The free plan can only use `auto` and `free`. If you pick another model, no note is made and you're asked to upgrade.

## If you're short on credits

Your balance is checked before a note is made. If it's not enough, nothing is created and no
credits are deducted.

You can check your remaining credits with `get_account`. Just ask your agent, "How many credits
do I have left?"

## How to get credits

| | |
| - | - |
| Plan | Given every month on a paid plan |
| Daily | Given the first time you open the app each day |
| Sign-up | Given once when you sign up |
| Purchase | Usable for 12 months from the day you buy them |

Credits are used in this order: daily, plan, sign-up, then purchased. Purchased credits are always used last. See plan prices at [readray.ai/pricing](https://readray.ai/pricing).
